Why does a black & white image in InDesign change when I toggle an empty yellow separation?

Before anyone suggests that the actual image really does have yellow in it, believe me I've checked in Photoshop. It's greyscale. I checked the images in this black & white doc in the separations panel. I turn off cyan & magenta (no problems), but when I turn off yellow the image gets darker. If I turn off black and leave only yellow on there's nothing there. The thing is, I don't know how dark the image will actually be. It actually looks more like the image viewed in Photoshop with the empty yellow separation on. Why would it change at all when I toggle an empty yellow separation? I've tried this with an unrelated greyscale image at work and it's the same thing.
